Ireland Secretly Donates Air Defense Radar Systems to Ukraine, Supplementing Swedish Missile Support
DUBLIN – In a notable, yet previously undisclosed move, the Irish goverment has donated advanced air defence radar systems to Ukraine earlier this year, responding to a direct request from Kyiv. While maintaining its official policy of providing only non-lethal aid, the donation represents Ireland’s most ample contribution yet to Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
The transferred equipment consists of Saab Giraffe Mark IV radar systems, designed to integrate with ground-to-air missile launchers. Crucially, Ireland did not donate the missile launchers themselves, adhering to its stated commitment to non-lethal assistance. However, Sweden has independently supplied RBS70 missile launchers to Ukraine, suggesting the Irish radar systems are likely being paired with these weapons to bolster Ukraine’s air defence network against Russian drone and cruise missile attacks.
