Google Pixel Development Shifts from China to Vietnam, Report Confirms

Google Shifts Pixel Phone Growth and Production to Vietnam

Google is significantly altering its Pixel phone strategy, moving both production and development – for most models – out of China and to Vietnam. This marks a major shift in the company’s supply chain, aiming for greater independence from Chinese manufacturing and development processes.

The Move Away from China

While Google has already been increasing production in Vietnam and India for some time, a crucial element remained in china: New Product Introduction (NPI). NPI encompasses the critical stages of developing, verifying, and refining production processes for new devices. It requires considerable investment in engineering, testing, and tooling.

NPI, which includes developing, verifying and fine-tuning production processes, is the most critical stage when a company brings out a new electronics device. hundreds of engineers from the company and its suppliers are involved, and heavy investment in testing equipment and tooling machines is required to ensure that the new design can actually be made according to the blueprints.

Previously, even with production occurring elsewhere, the Pixel 10 series and earlier relied on China for NPI. Though, Google began shifting production away from China in 2022, and has also initiated some production in India. Now, the company is taking the next step.

Vietnam as the New Hub

According to reports from Nikkei Asia (via Reuters), Google will now handle all development for the Pixel, Pixel Pro, and Pixel Fold lines in Vietnam. This means building these devices “from scratch” outside of China. The Pixel A-series will, for now, continue to be developed in China.

This is a substantial move, mirroring Apple’s strategy of diversifying NPI locations. The success of NPI is paramount; failure can delay or even cancel a new product launch for the year.

Google already conducts some verification processes in Vietnam, and sources indicate that building phones entirely in the contry is achievable. The company has not yet made an official statement, but the shift is expected to impact the Pixel 11 series and beyond.
