Google Launches First Space Data Center Satellite Running Gemma 4 AI
Google Orbital Data Center Satellite Generates Orbiting Haiku
Google’s first experimental space-based data center is online and communicating with the ground after launching earlier this month aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, science.slashdot.org reported. The spacecraft carries four Google Tensor Processing Units and generates up to one kilowatt of electricity to test heavy inference workloads in orbit.
The Tech TL;DR:
- Google’s Suncatcher prototype satellite launched earlier this month carrying four onboard Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and generating up to 1 kW of power.
- Ground engineers successfully prompted the pre-loaded Gemma 4 AI model to generate a space-themed haiku from orbit.
- Power constraints currently limit TPU operation to roughly 20 minutes at a time, while upcoming 2027 tests will evaluate radiation durability and inter-satellite optical links.
Gemma 4 Writes Space Poetry During Commissioning Tests
Following a commissioning process that tested the satellite subsystems over about three weeks, the spacecraft was ready to work, according to TechCrunch. This week, when ground-based engineers submitted their initial command, they instructed Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 model—which comes pre-loaded onto the satellite, Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4—to compose a short haiku about life in space.

TechCrunch reported that Google also tested the model with space-themed limericks and asked the spacecraft to report on the orbital conditions around it. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that the satellite was operating nominally.

Engineers Test Hardware Against Radiation and Thermal Stress
The current testing initiative will look at how well the chips hold up under thermal stress and within the radiation-filled environment of space. While Google has extensively tested its TPUs in particle accelerators on Earth, engineers now need to observe how radiation impacts physical hardware in space. Radiation can cause bit flips in computer memory, corrupting data without triggering standard monitoring tools. Ground testing suggested radiation impact would be minimal for inference workloads compared to model training, but the orbital test campaign provides real-world validation.
Power constraints shape the current hardware architecture. The onboard TPU power demands mean engineers can only turn on one processor for about 20 minutes at a time, complicating space-to-ground communications.

Google Plans More Satellite Launches in 2027
Should the TPUs currently in orbit demonstrate their reliability, two additional satellites fitted with advanced chips are scheduled to launch in 2027. Those spacecraft will support higher power generation and demonstrate inter-satellite optical links. Suncatcher researchers estimated in a peer-reviewed analysis published earlier this month that SpaceX would need to fly Starship 1,800 times to achieve the learning-driven cost reductions seen with earlier vehicles. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, holds a significant investment stake in SpaceX, and both companies rely on the heavy-lift rocket for their orbital infrastructure visions.
