Google is deepening the integration of its Gemini artificial intelligence assistant into its Workspace suite of applications, including Google Chat, Docs, Gmail, and Meet. The move, announced Monday, aims to bolster productivity for millions of users and directly challenges Microsoft’s Copilot offerings.
The latest update allows Gemini to search and summarize Google Chat history, a feature administrators must enable. Google says this will help teams quickly access crucial information from their communications. According to a Google Workspace blog post, Gemini can now help users retrieve project details, summarize missed discussions, and surface information buried in message history within the Gemini app.
This expansion follows the release of the more powerful Gemini 3.1 Pro model, designed for complex, multi-step tasks and improved logical reasoning. Google is positioning Gemini as an intelligent assistant that actively supports workflows, bringing the vision of proactive AI assistance closer to reality.
Beyond Chat integration, Google has introduced pre-built “Gems,” specialized AI profiles optimized for use cases such as recruiting or marketing. These are intended to streamline repetitive tasks. Gemini features are also becoming available in the education sector, with select functions accessible to users with Google Workspace for Education Plus licenses, supporting educators and learners aged 18 and over since early February.
Gemini’s strength lies in its seamless integration within existing applications. In Google Docs and Gmail, the AI functions as a writing partner, drafting content or summarizing texts, saving time on lengthy email threads. Google Meet now features “Make notes for me,” which automatically captures key points and action items, allowing participants to focus on the conversation. In Google Sheets, an “Enhanced Smart Fill” function recognizes patterns and helps automatically complete data.
Google is strategically including Gemini functions in most Workspace subscriptions, with availability in many Business and Enterprise plans since January 2025. This broad accessibility aims to make the AI technology available to a vast user base. For German-speaking users, Google highlights that Gemini has been natively trained in German, leading to increased precision.
The integration of Gemini into Workspace is a direct response to competition from Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft Copilot’s Google Contacts connector became generally available in late February 2026, allowing it to retrieve contact details from Google accounts, and was tested against Gemini’s integration. Google emphasizes that corporate data is not used to train its global AI models.
Looking ahead, Google suggests future updates will focus on increasing Gemini’s proactivity. Rather than solely responding to instructions, the AI could learn work habits and automate routine tasks independently. New applications, such as Google Vids, a KI-powered video creation tool, indicate a direction toward AI enabling new forms of creativity.
