Speculation is mounting that Sony may be preparing to announce a novel God of War title as early as this week’s State of Play presentation, though details remain scarce. The potential announcement centers around a side-story project set in Ancient Greece, a departure from the Norse mythology explored in recent installments.
The possibility of an imminent reveal gained traction following comments made by Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb during his daily “Game Mess Mornings” display. When asked directly about the project, Grubb offered a noncommittal response, stating, “Who could say? I certainly could not.” This followed Grubb’s earlier reporting, dating back to March 22, 2025, that a Greek-themed God of War project was in development, but would not be a remaster collection of previous titles.
Rumors of a remastered collection had circulated leading up to the franchise’s 20th anniversary, but Grubb’s sources indicated the company was pursuing a new, standalone experience. Sony has announced plans to celebrate the anniversary with in-game content for God of War Ragnarok, new merchandise, and a physical art exhibition.
Recent reports suggest the project may take the form of a 2.5D side-scrolling action game, potentially developed by Mega Cat Studios. This version of the game was reportedly delayed from a 2025 release to allow for the addition of voice acting. The possibility of a “shadow drop” – an unannounced release immediately following a presentation – has fueled further excitement among PlayStation fans, as reported by Push Square.
The potential platforms for the new title remain unclear. While a PlayStation 5 release is considered highly probable, speculation has arisen regarding a possible Nintendo Switch port, mirroring Sony’s recent strategy with LEGO Horizon Adventures. The choice of platforms could be revealed during the State of Play event, or in the days following, according to reports.
Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 God of War reboot, has previously indicated he did not envision a second trilogy based on Norse mythology. However, the conclusion of God of War Ragnarok left narrative threads open for future installments. The new side-story project would represent a return to the series’ roots, having originally focused on Greek mythology.
