Riyadh, saudi Arabia – The World Health Institution (WHO) has released alarming new data revealing that over one billion people globally are now living with mental health disorders. the findings, published in two reports released today – on global mental health and the atlas of mental health – underscore the immense human and economic toll of conditions like anxiety and depression.
The WHO is urgently calling for increased global investment and concerted efforts to expand access to mental health services, protect vulnerable populations, and promote overall mental wellbeing. The reports highlight both progress made and significant gaps in addressing these critical health needs.
“Achieving a transformative shift in mental health services is one of the most urgent health challenges we face,” stated Dr. tedros Adhanum Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “Investing in mental health is not simply a matter of healthcare; it’s an investment in individuals, societies, and economies. It cannot be neglected.”
According to the WHO’s data, anxiety and depression are the most prevalent mental disorders affecting both men and women. Tragically, suicide claims approximately 727,000 lives each year, making it a leading cause of death among young people worldwide.
The reports also reveal a concerning stagnation in global funding for mental health. Despite the growing need, government spending on mental health remains critically low, averaging just 2% of overall health budgets.
These findings emphasize the urgent need for a more thorough and adequately funded approach to mental healthcare globally. The WHO’s call to action serves as a stark reminder of the widespread impact of mental health disorders and the imperative to prioritize mental wellbeing for all.
