Gladiators Trier: A New European Era Against BC Batumi
Gladiators Trier will host Georgia’s champion BC Batumi on Wednesday at 20:00 in the Arena Trier, marking the club’s first European competition appearance in 25 years. Head coach Jacques Schneider stated his ambition to fight for the Europe Cup title, pointing to league rival Chemnitz winning the same trophy in 2024.
Chasing a Title After a Quarter-Century Absence
The fixture brings continental basketball back to Trier for the first time in 25 years. Back at the Altstadtfest this past summer, coach Jacques Schneider stood on the stage at the Domfreihof and pointed toward the balcony of the Palais Walderdorff, telling interviewers he would love to celebrate a title there with the team.
Trier enters the match sitting third in the Basketball-Bundesliga with three wins and one defeat after three months of competition. The squad carries momentum from an away victory last weekend in Ludwigsburg into Wednesday’s opening group stage fixture. Meanwhile, opponent BC Batumi opened its domestic season in Georgia with a win over the weekend. The Georgian league features several American players from smaller colleges attempting to use the competition as a springboard to stronger European leagues, with Batumi currently carrying four US players on its roster.

Group Dynamics and the Road to April 2027
The FIBA Europe Cup divides participating teams into eight groups of six. Trier finds a group featuring opponents from Greece, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Kosovo, specifically Patras, Split, Opava, and Trepca. The top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to a second group phase consisting of 16 clubs split into four groups. From there, the top two finishers advance again before the remaining eight teams contest the knockout rounds. The two finals are scheduled for the end of April 2027.
While European play remains new territory for coach Schneider and most of the roster, captain and former international player Maik Zirbes brings extensive elite experience. Zirbes played 59 games in the Euroleague for his heart’s club, making over 170 total appearances in European competitions for clubs including Bayern Munich and Red Star Belgrade. New signing Justin Simon won the EuroCup two years ago while playing for Paris.
Tickets for Wednesday’s opening tip-off against BC Batumi at the Arena Trier are expected to be available at the box office.
