GKN Aerospace hosts meeting on 0 million Garden Grove claims program

GKN Aerospace hosts meeting on $100 million Garden Grove claims program

October 28, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

More than 600 community members packed a local hotel ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, as reported by the Orange County Register, to participate in a long-anticipated gathering where they posed inquiries regarding a $100 million claims initiative and expressed persistent safety worries surrounding the upcoming reopening of the GKN Aerospace plant in Garden Grove.

Claims Program Targets Residents Affected by Chemical Incident

The voluntary claims program targets residents and businesses seeking restitution for losses related to the May 21 chemical incident and subsequent evacuations. During the Memorial Day weekend, a chemical storage tank at the aerospace manufacturing facility, which employs 500 workers, experienced a failure that raised the risk of an explosion, a toxic plume, or a ground-level leak capable of contaminating local drainage networks and surrounding residential areas. Emergency responders ultimately neutralized the danger after a multi-day evacuation affecting roughly 50,000 local residents and commercial establishments was triggered by the hazard.

People and households who lived within the mandatory evacuation zone spanning Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Stanton, and Westminster are eligible for expenses such as lost business and wages, meals, transportation, and hotel stays, the Orange County Register reported. Households may qualify for hotel reimbursements of up to $300 per night, designated amounts for meals and travel, a $500 residential loss-of-use grant, and documented lost wages of up to $500 per day for hourly workers who missed shifts. Businesses required to close due to the evacuation are offered up to $5,000 per day in documented lost profits.

Evacuated businesses, households, and individuals can check details and submit claims at GKNGGClaimsProgram.com, with an in-person assistance location opening on Nov. 9. Company representatives stated that funds should be received within 30 days once a settlement offer is signed.

GKN Aerospace Addresses Community Safety Concerns

GKN Aerospace Senior Vice President Steve Carlin addressed the standing-room-only crowd at the Delta Hotels in Garden Grove. “As I stated just after the accident and all the way through, we are committed to making things right by you and the community,” Carlin said, according to the Orange County Register. “We also understand that some of you have concerns about what we’ll do going forward. So today is a step in making things right.”

Despite assurances from GKN representatives that the plant is safe for employees to fully return to work, community concerns persist. Lingering safety questions, sparse executive appearances, and a nearly five-month wait for a community town hall have fueled public upset. Community members and local coalitions have attended nearly every Garden Grove City Council meeting since May to call for enhanced safety, a reduction in the use and storage of methyl methacrylate (MMA)—the chemical involved in the failing tank—and even a halt to operations.

Kevin Nguyen, 55, owns Xiem Tools, a ceramics and pottery tools company employing eight people yards from the facility. Nguyen’s business was closed for four days. While he felt safe returning to work after reviewing company information, he remained undecided on whether to recoup costs through litigation or the claims program due to questions regarding employee reimbursement, the Orange County Register reported.

Court Requires New Safety Plan Before Operations Restart

GKN Aerospace Vice President Sherri Murrish outlined updates to the facility and its new safety plan, which is required by the Orange County Superior Court before full operations—including MMA use—can restart. “We take our responsibility seriously and we will only return to operations when those requirements have been met,” Murrish said, as noted by the Orange County Register. “We know that rebuilding your trust will take time.”

Company representatives detailed technology upgrades to MMA storage systems and the installation of new equipment to monitor and regulate storage tank temperatures. During the emergency in May, emergency crews sprayed approximately 9 million gallons of water over five days to keep the overheating tank cool. Executives also announced that an independent auditor will conduct annual audits of the facility for the next seven years to check compliance with safety standards.
