Ghana Celebrates First Female Professor of Photogrammetry
Dr. naa Dedei Tagoe has made history as Ghana’s first female professor specializing in photogrammetry. Her recent promotion to Associate Professor of Geomatics at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) marks a important milestone for women in STEM fields within the country.
Professor Tagoe’s expertise encompasses a wide range of geospatial technologies, including land surveying, drone mapping (UAV applications), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing. She actively applies these skills to address real-world challenges, focusing on areas such as food security, sustainable mining practices, climate change resilience, and community empowerment through technology.
Beyond her academic role,Professor Tagoe is dedicated to fostering the next generation of geospatial professionals. She mentors students through the YouthMappers initiative, equipping them with the skills to utilize geospatial technology for sustainable progress. As a Mandela Washington Fellow, she also actively promotes women’s leadership and empowerment initiatives across the African continent.
professor Tagoe’s influence extends internationally as the Chair-elect of FIG Commission 8 (Spatial Planning and Development). In this role,she contributes to global discussions on land governance and sustainable urban development,elevating ghana’s position as a key voice within the international geospatial community.
