Cricket Eyes German Expansion as Refugee influx Fuels Growth
SINGAPORE – Germany is rapidly emerging as a significant growth market for cricket, fueled by an influx of refugees from cricket-playing nations and a burgeoning women’s program, according to officials at recent ICC annual meetings. The nation, traditionally known for football, is witnessing a surge in participation and interest in the sport.
Cricket’s growth in Germany began with the arrival of refugees, primarily from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. “Cricket has become strong in Germany as then, with most of the players coming from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan,” said cricket Germany President Brian Weiss.
Administrators are now focused on expanding the game beyond its initial base and establishing grassroots programs. A key area of focus is women’s cricket, where the German team is currently ranked 34th in T20 cricket – surpassing their male counterparts at 35th.
“Women’s cricket is growing, it’s a flagship for us,” Weiss stated. “We have a strong pool of under-19 girls taking up cricket. I think it’s fair enough to say that we are the only country behind the high performing Associates to have a dedicated girls team.”
Despite the positive momentum, Cricket Germany faces challenges common to Associate nations – those outside the top 12 ICC-ranked teams – including limited funding and infrastructure. Germany’s large geographic size and population of over 80 million, spread across 16 federal states, further complicate development efforts.
“We have all the common challenges of being a big country with limited resources,” Weiss explained. “It’s not only the cost, but the time and availability of the infrastructures.”
To address these hurdles, Cricket germany is exploring collaborative initiatives with neighboring countries to create regional age-group leagues, providing more competitive opportunities for young players.
Weiss emphasized the need for increased financial support, stating, ”it’s money that we need. That’s always the same.” He noted growing sponsor interest, notably with cricket’s inclusion as an Olympic sport.
The success of other emerging sports in Germany, such as American football and 3×3 basketball (where the German women’s team won gold at the Paris Olympics), demonstrates the potential for fringe sports to gain traction within the country. Weiss expressed optimism that, with sufficient investment, German teams could one day compete at the Olympics and T20 world Cups.
