Germany Vows Retaliation After Third Explosive Drone Found at Leipzig Airport

August 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

German authorities recovered a third drone equipped with a suspected explosive substance at Leipzig/Halle airport, prompting Friedrich Merz to warn that those responsible for hybrid attacks against the country "will pay."

Third Explosive-Rigged Drone Discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport

The discovery marks the latest in a series of security breaches that have rattled German aviation infrastructure. Security personnel located the device during ongoing sweeps of the transport hub, according to reporting from outlets including Euronews and the Financial Times. The incident follows the initial discovery of a suspicious drone threat earlier in the month, which prompted German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to state on August 6 that there were "many indications pointing in that direction" of a state actor.

Circumstantial Evidence Points Toward Perpetrators

Merz, of the Christian Democratic Union, did not officially attribute the attack to a specific government during his public remarks. However, according to the German outlet Bild, Merz told party members in a private meeting that the government possesses "circumstantial evidence pointing to the perpetrators of the crime." Merz emphasized that security agencies are working intensively on the case and will present their findings shortly.

Berlin Weighs Radical Overhaul of National Intelligence

Merz’s government and allied lawmakers are pushing to grant Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the BND, more leeway to counter threats from adversaries. Proposed reforms would allow BND operatives to carry out acts of sabotage and conduct offensive cyber operations.

Deteriorating Security Posture Since Ukraine Invasion

Security evaluations within the federal government indicate that the threat environment has deteriorated significantly since the onset of the war in Ukraine. According to a German intelligence report released last year, the country’s security posture worsened markedly after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
