Berlin,Germany In a significant shift in policy,Germany has suspended all exports of military equipment to Israel that could possibly be used in teh Gaza Strip, effective instantly. The decision, announced today by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, comes in response to the Israeli Cabinet’s recent approval of plans for a large-scale operation in Gaza City.

This marks a notable departure for Germany, which has historically been one of Israel’s strongest allies and a key supplier of military technology. The halt in exports includes weapons, ammunition, and related equipment. The German government has not specified the exact value of the suspended exports, but data from the Federal Statistical Office shows that in 2023, Germany approved €326.5 million ($354.4 million USD) in military exports to Israel – a substantial increase from €288.3 million in 2022.

Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself against hamas, reiterating that the release of Israeli hostages – currently estimated at over 130 individuals – and the pursuit of a ceasefire in the ongoing 22-month conflict remain top priorities. He emphasized that Hamas must not be allowed to maintain a governing role in Gaza’s future.

Though, Merz stated that the intensification of Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip, as authorized by the Israeli Cabinet on August 7th, 2024, raises serious concerns about the feasibility of achieving these goals. “Under these circumstances, the German government will not authorize any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice,” he declared.

The German government expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, emphasizing Israel’s increased responsibility to protect civilians during the planned offensive. Merz specifically called for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid deliveries, including those facilitated by United Nations agencies like UNRWA and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as Doctors Without Borders and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Beyond the immediate suspension of military exports, Germany also reiterated its opposition to any further steps towards annexing the West Bank. This position aligns with international consensus and reflects concerns about the long-term prospects for a two-state solution. The West bank, occupied by Israel as the 1967 Six-Day War, is home to approximately 3 million Palestinians.
