Germany’s Defence Ministry refuted a report published Thursday by Reuters stating that Berlin was seeking to procure an additional 15 F-35 fighter jets from the United States. The ministry did not offer a reason for the denial, but the statement casts doubt on the future size of Germany’s planned F-35 fleet.
The initial order, finalized in December 2022, committed Germany to purchasing 35 F-35A Lightning II aircraft for approximately €10 billion (USD $11.5 billion), according to the German Ministry of Defence. Production of the first F-35A for the Luftwaffe began in November 2025, with State Secretary Nils Hilmer formally launching manufacturing at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas, by signing the bulkhead of aircraft MG-01.
The F-35A is intended to replace Germany’s aging Tornado fleet, which plays a critical role in NATO’s nuclear deterrence mission. The new aircraft will also enhance Germany’s conventional air-to-air and air-to-surface capabilities, bringing stealth technology and advanced sensors to Luftwaffe operations.
Pilot and maintainer training is scheduled to initiate in the United States in 2026, with the first F-35As expected to arrive at Büchel Air Base in late 2027. Deliveries are planned to continue through 2029, with initial operating capability anticipated that same year and full capability by 2030.
While senior Luftwaffe officials have previously indicated a potential interest in acquiring additional F-35s, the Defence Ministry has not publicly confirmed any plans for expansion beyond the original 35-aircraft order. Lockheed Martin spokesperson confirmed the company is focused on fulfilling existing orders. A Pentagon spokesperson deferred questions to Germany.
The Reuters report, citing unnamed sources, suggested the additional purchase was being considered as the Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program faces delays. The Defence Ministry’s denial does not address the status of the FCAS program or whether its challenges influenced the decision regarding further F-35 acquisitions.
