German Man Arrested for Murder in Teen’s Suicide, FBI Says
German authorities arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of murder in connection with the suicide of a 14-year-old Indiana girl who communicated with him over Discord.
German Authorities Arrest Suspect in Girl's Death
Fort Wayne Police Department officers responded to a death investigation involving the 14-year-old girl earlier in October. The department’s Homicide Unit identified a suspect who allegedly contributed to her death while working alongside the FBI and authorities in Germany. The FBI Indianapolis Field Office announced that German authorities arrested the suspect on suspicion of murder. The Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the suspect was 17 years old at the time of the alleged crime, according to a translated article by German broadcaster NDR.
German prosecutors allege that the suspect communicated with the victim over Discord and manipulated her into hurting herself and ultimately taking her own life. According to NDR, prosecutors stated that the suspect demanded the victim record her self-harm and tried to obtain recordings of her suicide after she died. Investigators believe the suspect orchestrated the suicide by threatening to release compromising video footage of her. Recordings made by the victim referenced a group named “NMK,” standing for “Nefarious Maniac Cult.”
Police Warnings on Dark Web Networks
The Fort Wayne Police Department held a press conference on October 14 to warn parents, guardians, educators, and young people about dark web groups and online networks that they state are leading to deaths across the United States. Police reported that perpetrators use platforms such as Discord, Roblox, and Telegram to build relationships with children and vulnerable individuals. According to investigators, friend requests and messages from these predators can escalate into grooming, sextortion, threats, and psychological manipulation, with photos and information sent by victims subsequently used to blackmail or extort them.
“Anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand this: There is no safe haven from justice,” said FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley. “It doesn’t matter where you live or where you try to hide. The FBI will work with our partners around the world to find you and hold you accountable.”
The FBI stated that information about potential federal crimes can be reported at tips.fbi.gov/home.
