Elon Musk's AI Odyssey Ridiculed Online for Historical Inaccuracies

Elon Musk’s AI Odyssey Ridiculed Online for Historical Inaccuracies

On October 23, 2026, Elon Musk and his AI platform released a seven-minute video version of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey on the X platform, drawing widespread online mockery for historical inaccuracies and unnatural aesthetics.

The Genesis of an AI Epic

In his initial announcements, Musk promised that his AI tool, Grok Imagine, would deliver a feature-length adaptation that was both historically accurate and faithful to Homer’s art. He also criticized Nolan for altering the material to meet what he termed “woke requirements” necessary to win an Oscar.

Anachronisms and Unnamed Faces

The resulting seven-minute clip opens with Odysseus preparing to sail for Troy while Penelope hands him a small wooden horse toy for their young son. The narrative then cuts between Greek military preparations, battles in Troy, and Telemachus training as a warrior.

As noted, all characters in the excerpt appear white, sport digitally smoothed skin and perfect teeth, and speak English rather than ancient Greek. Furthermore, the clip depicts Greeks landing at Troy—an event that occurs before the narrative scope of Homer’s The Odyssey actually begins. Viewers also reported that outside of Odysseus, characters go unnamed, forcing uninitiated audiences to guess identities and plot roles.

Swift Derision on Social Media

Reactions on social media were swift and largely derisive.

Comments from users labeled the production “pure garbage” and a complete waste of time and money, with one user writing that the clip demonstrates how little artificial intelligence understands human art. Another user pointed out the contradiction between Musk promising historical accuracy and releasing a trailer filled with historical errors and anachronistic wardrobe and architecture.

Uncharted Horizons for AI Cinema

It remains unclear whether the initiative will expand into a full-length feature or continue as episodic content.
