German Jets Intercept Russian Military Aircraft Over Baltic Sea Amid Rising Tensions
Berlin – German Eurofighter jets were scrambled on Sunday to intercept a Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea,Germany’s air force announced. The incident occurred as tensions escalate between Russia and NATO nations, with warnings issued regarding the potential for wider conflict.
Latvia’s President Edgars Rinkēvičs cautioned on Facebook that continued Russian provocations against NATO in the coming weeks carry a risk of “serious conflict,” stating European governments, while not desiring a wider war,”had no choice but to respond.” He added,”russia is doing just enough to make it seem like it is not going too far. But, knowing both the logic of thinking in Russia and the frequent incompetence at various levels, this [a conflict] could happen. The obligation will lie with the Kremlin.”
the incident follows accusations from Russia against the UK, labeling it a leader of a pro-war “camp,” and a rejection of western pressure tactics aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
Meanwhile, Czech president Petr Pavel urged NATO to respond decisively to Russian aggression and maintain unity, asserting, “Unfortunately, this is balancing on the brink of conflict, but giving in to evil is simply unachievable.”
The situation unfolds as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares to meet with both UN officials and Donald Trump, having previously stated his willingness to engage in talks with Vladimir Putin, contingent on Russia addressing the “root causes” of the war - a condition widely understood to meen Ukrainian surrender.
