Genoa Enters New Era Under Dan Șucu After Legal Victory
Genoa CFC chief executive Andrés Blázquez expressed optimism regarding a new era for the Serie A club under majority owner Dan Șucu after a Genoa court rejected A-Cap’s challenge to the club’s recapitalisation for the third time on 23 June, following 18 months of litigation, sportspro.com reported.
The legal victory provides the club with greater ownership clarity, allowing management to pursue new financial partnerships and execute a football-focused strategy. A-Cap retains a minority stake of approximately 22 per cent, but Blázquez guaranteed the firm holds zero involvement in club governance.
Court Ruling Ends 18 Months of Litigation
The 23 June court decision validated the club’s direction following a prolonged dispute that cost millions of euros in legal fees and complicated relationships with financial institutions and stakeholders. Blázquez stated that the decision confirmed the correct path had been taken for the club’s benefit, noting that the former owner is now facing several widely publicized investigations in the United States.
Șucu has served as majority owner since December 2024, stepping in when the business was close to bankruptcy. Blázquez noted that from the moment Șucu arrived, the legal implications were clear due to his defined purpose and vision for the investment.
Missed Transfer Opportunities Under Previous Ownership
The ownership dispute carried distinct sporting costs alongside financial expenditures. According to Blázquez, Genoa missed opportunities to sign Djed Spence for €7 million and goalkeeper David de Gea on a free transfer after previous management rejected the proposals. Blázquez recalled that A-Cap dismissed the potential signing of De Gea by labeling him an old-style goalkeeper.
Management also evaluated Mason Greenwood when his valuation possessed potential for exponential growth. Blázquez estimates that interference from individuals lacking a football-focused approach cost the club between €70 million and €80 million in lost player value.
Financial Recovery and Future Strategy
With ownership questions settled, Genoa aims to strengthen its balance sheet, improve overall financial health, and sustain investment in the squad. The club seeks to attract new commercial partners without the operational uncertainty that characterized the previous ownership structure.
