Tetsuya Chiba, Creator of Ashita no Joe, Dies at 87

October 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Chiba Tetsuya, the master manga artist who shaped post-war Japanese culture with the classic boxing series Tomorrow’s Joe, died at the age of 87 on October 22 at a Tokyo hospital, according to reports.

Legacy of Tomorrow’s Joe and 70-Year Career

Born in Tokyo in 1939, Chiba spent his early childhood in Manchuria before returning to Japan following the end of the Pacific War. He debuted as a professional manga artist in 1956, building a career that spanned approximately seven decades. His most celebrated work, Tomorrow’s Joe, followed the grueling journey of protagonist Joe Yabuki and his ultimate rival, Rikiishi Toru. The cultural impact of the series reached a peak in 1970 when publishers held a real-world funeral for Rikiishi within the narrative. The tragic character’s parting words—”I’ve burned it out… completely burned it out… pure white…”—became a defining phrase in Japanese comic history.

Beyond his defining boxing epic, Chiba created several other notable titles, including Hot Wind! Kendo Invincible, Bad Boy Mitsutaro, and Green’s Conqueror. Over his 87-year life, his active tenure as a creator lasted roughly 70 years, a longevity that his surviving family attributed directly to the sustained support of his readership.

Industry Tribute and Recognition for Peace Advocacy

Alongside his creative output, Chiba maintained a dedicated focus on education regarding the tragedies of war and the value of peace, drawing directly from his childhood repatriation experiences. The Japan Cartoonists Association, where Chiba previously served as both chairman and president, noted that his leadership fundamentally advanced the medium, improved the social standing of manga artists, and promoted comic distribution across the country. The Japanese government recognized these contributions with the Order of the Rising Sun, Small Gold Rays in 2012, followed by the prestigious Order of Culture in 2024.
