GCB Bank Pitches Direct TikTok Payments to Empower Ghanaian Creators
Accra,Ghana – GCB Bank is proposing a direct payment solution for Ghanaian content creators on TikTok,aiming to streamline earnings and eliminate intermediary fees. The proposal, presented to Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), seeks to establish GCB Bank as a reliable payment gateway for the popular social media platform.
The move comes as Ghanaian creators increasingly rely on TikTok for income, often facing challenges in receiving timely and complete compensation for their content. GCB Bank, led by Chief of Staff Mr. abraham Ferguson, highlighted its existing infrastructure and technological capabilities to support the creative economy during a recent meeting with the Minister.
“The bank possesses robust connectivity with MasterCard and Visa, enabling it to except and make payments directly onto cards,” ferguson stated.GCB Bank also showcased its ability to facilitate payouts via Mobile Money (MoMo) and direct bank account transfers.
The core objective, according to Ferguson, is to “find a way for Ghanaians to get paid for their content and manage cash-outs for gifts received.”
Minister George actively supported the proposal, directly engaging with Ms. Tokumbo Ibrahim, TikTok’s representative for West Africa, to advocate for GCB bank as an official payment channel. He argued that a direct connection would bypass third-party services and their associated costs, maximizing financial benefits for Ghanaian talent.
Ms. Tokumbo (TikTok) has committed to reviewing the feasibility of the proposed solution. Mr. Ferguson expressed optimism, stating that a positive response would immediatly initiate the process of establishing a direct connection.
“This would involve formalising a payment framework in consultation with relevant financial authorities and establishing technical teams to facilitate the seamless integration,” Ferguson explained.
The potential partnership represents a important step towards bolstering Ghana’s digital economy and ensuring fair compensation for its growing community of TikTok creators.
