Desk Job Dangers: Prolonged sitting linked to Gut Issues, Says Gastroenterologist
New Delhi – Long hours spent seated at a desk can considerably impact gut health, leading to bloating, constipation, and even inflammation, according to Dr. Senthil Ganesan, a gastroenterologist. The doctor explained that a lack of movement disrupts the natural digestive process, hindering optimal gut function.
Our digestive system, particularly the intestines, relies on regular muscle contractions – known as peristalsis – to move food through the system. “When we stay still, gut motility slows down, causing bloating, constipation, and discomfort,” Dr. Ganesan stated.
He further elaborated that prolonged sitting creates “stagnation” in the gut, which can heighten inflammation and contribute to feelings of lethargy during the workday. The gut isn’t simply a passive tube, but a complex system requiring movement. “It’s a complex system with muscles contracting in waves, nerves coordinating these movements, and bacteria aiding digestion. When we sit for too long, these muscles don’t get the workout they need. If your overall activity is low, things start to stagnate, especially after a high-calorie, fat-rich, modern diet. This stagnation in the gut can trigger inflammation, slow metabolism, and make you feel lethargic.”
For those with desk jobs, dr. Ganesan recommends incorporating frequent breaks into the workday. “Avoid sitting in one place at the office for more than 45 minutes. Even short, strategic breaks-like walking around the office or doing stretches-can help. Make a habit of standing up while taking phone calls.”
He also emphasized the importance of adequate hydration and a high-fibre diet, tho he cautioned that fibre alone isn’t a solution. “Drinking water regularly helps, as dehydration also slows down bowel movements and is a common cause of constipation. Many people turn to high-fibre diets to keep their intestines moving, but fibre alone can’t replace movement.”
If bloating occurs during work hours, dr. Ganesan advises simple movement like stretching or standing during calls to stimulate gut motility.
