Gary Heffern, Penetrators Frontman and Punk Pioneer, Dies at 72
Gary Heffern Dies in Finland Days After Hall of Fame Induction
Gary Heffern, the San Diego punk rocker, songwriter, and poet who fronted the 1980s band the Penetrators, was found dead on Sunday at his home in Rovaniemi, Finland, by his niece. He was 72. His death came just days after he and his bandmates were inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame on Friday, timesofsandiego.com reported.
Failing Health Preceded the Sudden Death in Rovaniemi
A cause of death has not yet been announced. Heffern had been in failing health in recent years, facing medical issues that included complications from Type 2 diabetes. He was found at his residence in Rovaniemi, a Finnish town straddling the Arctic Circle. His siblings in Finland had contacted him around November 2005, prompting him to visit and ultimately settle permanently after gaining Finnish citizenship as a native-born son.
The Penetrators Reached the Top of San Diego Punk
Born Veli-Matti Tervaniemi on August 21, 1954, in Finland, Heffern came to the United States as a toddler when he and his older sister Helena were adopted from an orphanage by a San Diego family. As the frontman for the Penetrators in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Heffern anchored the city’s emerging punk scene. At Friday’s ceremony, longtime San Diego DJ Jim McInnes inducted the band. They became the top dogs in San Diego around 1980 or ’81,
McInnes recalled, noting that the band commanded enough pull to sell out the 3,000-capacity Golden Hall at the downtown Civic Center.
Collaborations Spanned Decades Across the United States and Europe
Despite moving to Seattle in the mid-1980s and later relocating to Finland, Heffern maintained a steady output of music and writing. His 1990 solo album, Bald Tires in the Rain, opened with Letter to San Diego.
Later recording sessions produced the 1995 album Painful Days, which closed with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s Passing Through
featuring guest vocals from Eddie Vedder under the pseudonym Wes C. Addle. Heffern subsequently released Consolation in 2008 and a collaboration with Finnish musicians titled Gary Heffern & Beautiful People in 2011, alongside a 2014 poetry collection named Unholy Dreams.
A Poignant Farewell
A video Heffern made last month that’s now posted to YouTube is a poignant farewell. The video accompanies a track recorded 13 years ago.
