Garin vows continuity of energy policies, reforms

New Energy Secretary Pledges Renewed Focus on Green Development

**Sharon Garin** Vows to Accelerate Renewable Energy and Electrification Efforts

Newly appointed Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has pledged to sustain existing reforms and policies within the department, emphasizing a commitment to faster renewable energy development and broader electrification across the nation.

Continuity and Progress

In her initial official statement, **Garin** assured stakeholders that the department remains steadfast in its commitment to current energy sector policies and reform initiatives. She takes the helm from **Raphael Lotilla**, who now leads the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Secretary outlined key priorities, including accelerating renewable energy development, expanding electrification programs, improving energy resilience, and bolstering the nation’s investment climate.

Balancing Energy Priorities

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed **Garin** last week. She expressed a deep sense of duty in her new role, acknowledging the critical need to balance energy security, sustainability, and affordability for the country.

Garin highlighted the success of the agency’s Green Energy Auction program and the growing investor confidence in the energy transition, citing these as evidence of positive progress under the current policy direction.

“These initiatives are aligned not only with our long-term energy goals but also with broader aspirations for inclusive and sustainable national development,” **Garin** stated.

She further declared, “The Department shall continue to promote collaboration, uphold transparency, and pursue innovative and responsive energy solutions to ensure that every Filipino benefits from a reliable, secure, and sustainable energy future.”

The Philippines aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix. As of 2023, renewable sources accounted for approximately 22% of the country’s installed capacity, with significant potential for further growth in solar and wind power (Philippine Energy Plan 2020-2040). This push aligns with global efforts to decarbonize energy systems.
