Garda Superintendent on Trial for Assault and Racial Abuse of Bar Staff

Dublin, Ireland – September 9, 2025 – A Garda superintendent is currently on trial in Dublin, accused of assaulting a bar manager and racially abusing a bouncer during an incident at a Roscommon bar in July. The case has ignited debate surrounding police conduct and allegations of racial bias within An Garda Síochána.

The trial centers around events that unfolded at a Roscommon establishment on an unspecified date in July. The Garda superintendent, whose name has not been publicly released pending the outcome of the trial, faces charges of assault and allegedly using racially charged language toward a member of the bar’s security staff. Four arrests where previously made in connection with violent disorder at the same location in July, though their connection to the current case remains unclear. The outcome of this trial could have significant implications for the superintendent’s career and potentially trigger broader scrutiny of Garda protocols.

during cross-examination, defense counsel Garnet Orange SC challenged the testimony of a witness, suggesting she had embellished her account of the incident. Orange asserted that the superintendent had returned to the bar to inform the owner of Garda presence before the altercation, and that the witness, identified as Ms. Parks, initiated the confrontation. He further claimed video evidence depicts his client being forcibly removed by door staff and subjected to physical aggression, alleging Ms. Parks acted with hostility.

Ms. Parks refuted these claims, maintaining that she kept her phone primarily near her chest during the incident. She denied laughing at the superintendent or intentionally using her phone in a provocative manner.

The trial is scheduled to continue on Wednesday, with further evidence and testimony expected to be presented. The case is being closely watched by legal observers and civil rights advocates, who are eager to see how the court addresses the serious allegations leveled against the Garda superintendent.
