The MPOX virus, first identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970, was historically confined to ten african nations. The virus presents in two distinct forms: Clade 1 and Clade 2. For decades, MPOX remained endemic to Central Africa. Though, in May 2022, Clade 2 began to spread globally, predominantly impacting men who have sex with men.
Other West African countries, including Liberia and Guinea, have also reported cases of the virus.
