Gabon Accelerates Digital Change: Visa Partnership to Revolutionize Public Service Payments

The commitment to digital transformation was underscored by a recent meeting between Vice-President Alexandre Barro Chambrier and Ismahill Diaby, Vice-President and Managing Director of Visa for West Africa and the Visa Center.The presence of the Minister of digital Economy, Mark Alexandre Doumba, further emphasized the government’s dedication to this pivotal project.

This collaboration, building on a strategic alliance forged in May, aims to develop innovative digital solutions for a range of critical functions. Key objectives include modernizing tax collection, automating disbursements for both individuals and businesses, and the deployment of a secure digital identity system. A cornerstone of the partnership is the commitment to financial inclusion, with plans to distribute virtual bank cards to underserved populations, thereby expanding access to conventional banking services.

“This project is beneficial for the Gabonese state, as it will reduce costs and deadlines associated with administrative procedures, improve the quality of public services and strengthen citizens’ confidence in public administration,” a government statement released on Facebook highlighted. “It will also contribute to the economic advancement of the country by facilitating transactions and exchanges, which can attract investments and create jobs.”

A study conducted in conjunction with the American strategy consulting firm Kearney corroborates the transformative potential of digitizing citizen-public sector interactions. Such digitization can considerably improve access to public services, bolster citizen and business confidence in government, foster innovation for small businesses, and ultimately stimulate economic prosperity by creating an environment conducive to growth for individuals, businesses, and the economy as a whole.
