Forza Motorsport Series Faces Uncertain Future After Microsoft Layoffs

The future of the Forza Motorsport series is in doubt after recent layoffs at Turn 10 Studios. The cuts, part of a larger wave at Microsoft, have sparked concerns about the racing franchise’s survival.

Mass Layoffs Hit Turn 10 Studios

Microsoft recently terminated the employment of approximately 9,000 employees, significantly impacting several Xbox studios, including Turn 10, the studio behind Forza Motorsport. According to industry insider Jason Schreier, close to half the staff at Turn 10 were let go, casting serious doubt on the future of the Forza Motorsport series.

Fred Russell, formerly a content coordinator at Turn 10 Studios, posted on his Facebook page, seemingly confirming the end of Forza Motorsport. He indicated that remaining staff will now support Playground Games on the Forza Horizon series.

Turn 10 Studios ended Forza Motorsport space and the team no longer exists. A very sad day for one of the best car racing games. I loved my time there, Russell wrote.

Potential Sale of Playground Games?

In response to comments on his post, Russell suggested that Microsoft Gaming might even sell Playground Games. This would further complicate any potential reassignment of Turn 10 employees.

Despite the uncertainty, Russell added that the legacy remains, even if there is no future for the game. His words are likely to sadden many longtime Xbox fans who view Forza Motorsport as a defining racing title on the console.

Broader Gaming Industry Impact

The layoffs at Microsoft reflect a broader trend of restructuring within the gaming industry. A recent report by the Entertainment Software Association showed that nearly two-thirds of video game companies have experienced layoffs or restructuring in the past year (ESA, 2024).

The fate of the Forza Motorsport series hangs in the balance, leaving fans to wonder if the franchise will ever see another installment. The future direction of Microsoft Gaming will ultimately determine if this iconic racing game has a chance to return.
