Former Home of Dame Theresa Gattung Listed for Sale in Westmere
An Auckland house designed by architect Andrew Patterson and once owned by My Food Bag co-founder Dame Theresa Gattung has been listed for sale with a deadline closing on November 24, OneRoof reported.
Architectural Design and Features at Livingstone Street
The three-bedroom property at 3 Livingstone Street in Auckland’s Westmere was purchased by the current vendor six years ago for $3.55 million. The vendor described the property as a pretty ambitious build for its time, noting that Andrew Patterson stands out as one of New Zealand’s top architects. Patterson is also known for designing the luxury mansion at Andersons Cove, which sold this year for a record-breaking $56m.
The vendor stated that he invited Patterson over to discuss the unusual design of the house. According to the vendor, Patterson explained that the exterior spiral staircase was designed so that residents walk toward the ocean as they walk to bed. The design also incorporates walls of glass for natural light, high ceilings, a sleek swimming pool, and the complete privacy of a 600sqm section.

Describing the interior layout, the vendor noted that downstairs is open, crisp, and light with views of the pool, while upstairs bedrooms feel quite lush and calm. The vendor also mentioned that the home has proved kid-friendly, offering safe play areas, a swimming pool visible from the kitchen, and a playground located just around the corner.
Dame Theresa Gattung Sold the Westmere Property
Dame Theresa Gattung owned the Westmere property for five years before selling it. In 2020, Dame Theresa told OneRoof that she commissioned Patterson to design a new home at Waihi Beach to replace an old bach she had owned for 20 years. Discussing Patterson's work, she said she loved the good sense of scale, adding that the home feels expansive while fitting into the surroundings.
The current vendor recounted that he told the listing agent back in 2020 that he intended to buy the house, even posting a photo on Instagram of himself standing on the staircase before the purchase. Despite enjoying the property, the vendor and his partner have decided to sell in order to build something from scratch.

Wall Real Estate listing agent Fliss Grennell stated that she expects the house, which carries a rating valuation of $4.5m, to attract strong interest. Grennell noted that the property has been admired for years, with several people inquiring over time about whether it would ever come to market.
