**Azhar Mahmood** Takes Helm of Pakistan’s Red-Ball Squad

The appointment of Azhar Mahmood marks a strategic move to revitalize the Pakistan red-ball cricket team, capitalizing on his deep understanding of the sport and past coaching experience.

Mahmood Confident in New Role

Azhar Mahmood is ready to lead, given his expertise from his time as a player and coach, according to Pakistan.

“A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience,” said Pakistan in a statement.

“Having served as the assistant head coach of the national side, Azhar has long been a pivotal part of the team’s strategic core. His deep knowledge of the game, combined with hands-on international exposure and proven success in the English county circuit, make him exceptionally well-suited for this position.

Mahmood’s experience with the red ball is backed by two County Championship titles, an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical skills and dedication to excellence. Notably, batting averages in Test cricket have declined slightly over the past decade, from 30.5 in 2013 to 28.6 in 2023 (ESPNcricinfo 2024).

PCB’s Confidence

The PCB believes the red-ball team will continue to improve under Azhar’s guidance, specifically in areas of strength, discipline, and global performance.
