Flu Shot Urged as Global Cases Rise, Bird Flu Concerns Mount
Marburg, Germany – health officials are reinforcing the critical importance of seasonal flu vaccination amid rising influenza cases internationally and ongoing concerns about potential complications from avian flu viruses. The German Center for infection Research (DZIF) emphasizes vaccination as the most reliable protection against severe illness, particularly as infection waves intensify.
This year’s seasonal vaccines offer broad protection against multiple circulating strains, including influenza A/H1N1 and influenza B. Experts warn that simultaneous infection with both seasonal and avian influenza (H5N1) could lead to genetic reassortment, possibly creating new pandemic strains. “Vaccination remains the most reliable protection against serious influenza illnesses,” states DZIF expert Prof. Stephan Becker. “Especially in years in which a more intense wave of infections is emerging, a high vaccination rate is particularly notable in order to reduce serious illnesses and hospital admissions.”
The suggestion for consistent flu vaccination is further strengthened by the continued presence of H5N1 in bird populations within Germany and isolated human cases worldwide. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) expressly recommends vaccination against seasonal influenza to mitigate the risk of double infections in individuals with close contact to H5N1-infected birds.
Beyond individual health, widespread vaccination is a cornerstone of national and international healthcare infrastructure, reducing strain on hospitals and protecting vulnerable populations. Citizens are urged to receive the vaccination promptly, following STIKO guidelines.
