Florida Lawyer Arrested After Punching Elderly Cruise Passenger

Florida Lawyer Phillip Ortiz Accused of Attacking​ a⁢ Man in⁢ Wild Norwegian Cruise Ship‌ Brawl

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY,FL – A 38-year-old Florida ‌attorney is facing charges of aggravated battery after allegedly attacking a 67-year-old man aboard a Norwegian Cruise ‍ship,leaving‌ the victim unconscious.‌ Phillip Ortiz, of Miami Lakes, was arrested ‍following the incident, according to a‍ criminal complaint filed in ​Miami-Dade​ County.

The⁤ altercation occurred‍ when Ortiz was reportedly told he could not access a restricted corridor‌ on the ship. Witnesses⁣ and‍ police​ reports indicate⁤ a verbal dispute ⁤escalated into a physical confrontation, ultimately resulting‌ in the victim sustaining serious injuries. The incident highlights the potential ⁣for escalating conflicts in enclosed environments and raises questions​ about ‌security protocols on cruise ‌lines.

According to the criminal ⁤complaint, Ortiz ‌confronted the man, allegedly stating, “Who the f— ‍are ‌you to tell ‍me ⁣what I can and can’t do?”‍ The⁣ victim‍ told police Ortiz then pushed him, and a‌ woman believed to be Ortiz’s wife also joined in pushing the man.​ After retreating, Ortiz‍ allegedly forced ‍open a door and⁣ charged at the⁢ victim.

The report details that ⁣Ortiz tripped ⁢the man, causing him to fall and hit his‍ head, with Ortiz’s ‍full body weight landing on top of⁢ him,‌ resulting in a loss of consciousness. ⁢Passengers immediately began‍ performing CPR on the victim while Ortiz allegedly did not​ offer assistance.

Ortiz’s attorney, Stephan‌ Lopez, stated, “My​ client vehemently denies that ‍he is the primary aggressor,” according to WSVN.

Norwegian Cruise Line released a statement to USA Today, saying, “We have zero tolerance for violence⁤ of any kind on​ our ships and are⁤ committed to providing a safe cruising experience for all aboard.” ​

The examination ‌is ongoing. ⁤Ortiz is‌ charged with aggravated battery on a person⁣ 65 or older. ​It remains unclear weather the victim was a‌ passenger or a‍ member of the ship’s⁢ crew.
