Finland Deepens Support for Ukraine, Prioritizes Own Border Security
Helsinki, Finland – Finland is actively bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities while together reinforcing its own security along its 1,300km border with Russia, according to statements made by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen. Finland has been providing defense and training assistance to the Ukrainian army since the beginning of the conflict, and is a key member of the “Coalition of Volunteers” – a group of countries supporting Ukraine led by Great Britain and France – since February of this year.
Orpo emphasized Finland’s existing commitment, stating, “He also reminded that Finland has been politically and militarily involved in the beginning of Ukraine’s defense war through systematic delivery of defense and training assistance for the Ukrainian army.”
Regarding potential security guarantees for Ukraine, Orpo stated the focus remains on strengthening Ukraine’s existing defenses. He directly addressed Russian objections to Western troops in Ukraine, responding, “- Russia claims that it does not accept Western troops in Ukraine. In response, we can say that we do not accept Russian troops in Ukraine.” He further indicated that increased US involvement in Ukraine’s security is highly likely if Russia does not engage in the peace process.
Defense Minister Hakkanen highlighted the unique position Finland holds, stating,”Western allies understand that Finland has over 1300 km of a common border with Russia and priority is its protection as to a millimeter.” He confirmed that this border security concern will be a key factor in determining any security guarantees offered, with various options currently under review. The Finnish government maintains that its primary military objective remains the defense of its own territory.
