Feminine Hygiene Drive: Supporting Students in Coahuila’s Rural Communities

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

A civil organization in Saltillo, Coahuila, has launched a campaign to collect menstrual hygiene products for students in rural secondary schools, addressing a critical require for access to essential supplies. Proyecto Mujeres is seeking donations of sanitary pads, tampons, and soap to support students attending schools in the southeastern region of the state.

The initiative focuses on three schools: Juan Rulfo, located in the ejido La Rosa in General Cepeda. Patria y Libertad, in the ejido San Ignacio, Ramos Arizpe; and Nancy Cárdenas Mtz, in the ejido 28 de Enero, Parras de la Fuente. According to Paola Praga, a member of Proyecto Mujeres, the campaign was initiated at the request of teachers at these schools.

“This year we began with this collection that is directed to secondary schools in rural areas of Ramos Arizpe, General Cepeda and Parras de la Fuente,” Praga stated. “The reality is that the teachers themselves asked us for support to carry out this collection.”

Proyecto Mujeres aims to provide each school with between 500 and 700 pads, calculating need based on individual use rather than package size. Praga explained that, on average, a woman may use up to 18 pads per menstrual cycle. Additional donations will be gratefully accepted and distributed.

The organization is seeking to secure three to six months of supply for students in need. Donations can be coordinated through the Proyecto Mujeres Facebook page, where individuals can message the organization to arrange a convenient drop-off point.

The campaign runs from February 18th to February 28th. In Saltillo, the Secretariat of Women is also working to support women and children in the state, with services including centers for justice and empowerment, and programs focused on preventing violence and adolescent pregnancy, according to a statement released on February 8, 2026.

Separately, feminist collectives in Saltillo announced a day of free services for women on March 7th, in the lead-up to International Women’s Day on March 8th. The “Las morras te orientan” initiative will offer free legal advice, basic medical attention, and mental health support in Plaza Nueva Tlaxcala. The city has also implemented a “Sitios Seguros” (Safe Spaces) program to provide immediate support to women facing harassment or violence.
