Nationals MP Michael McCormack questioned Energy Minister Chris Bowen on Wednesday regarding reports of asbestos found in imported materials used in wind tower construction in Australia. The exchange occurred during Question Time on november 26, 2025.
McCormack raised concerns about reports asbestos had been detected in materials imported from China for wind towers built in Australia, asking, “What action is the minister taking too address this?”
Bowen stated the issue related to Goldwind Australia projects completed in 2020, describing it as a “very serious matter.” He confirmed state regulators were conducting checks to ascertain if other wind farms were affected and that the government was collaborating with states to ensure workplace safety.
“Work is being conducted to replace the affected parts under the comprehensive safety management plans. An self-reliant industrial hygienist had been assessing the risk,” Bowen said. He further emphasized, “It’s the responsibility of importers and exporters to ensure that they do not import or export prohibited goods such as asbestos.”
