Nigeria Launches National Digital Governance Platform, Ushering in Era of Paperless Efficiency
ABUJA – in a landmark move poised to revolutionize public service, the Nigerian Federal Government has initiated the nationwide rollout of its paperless governance program. Select Ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) are now operating on the 1Government Cloud (1Gov) – a sovereign digital platform developed by Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB).
The initial phase includes critical institutions such as the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the Ministry of Solid Minerals, the Ministry of Steel Progress, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and the Federal Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs. this integration marks a important step towards establishing a secure, digitally-driven public sector.
according to Wumi Oghoetuoma, Programme Director of 1Government Cloud, the platform is designed to fundamentally modernize government operations. “this initiative will dismantle long-standing bureaucratic hurdles by streamlining approval processes and enhancing dialog between agencies,” Oghoetuoma explained. “The reduction in costs associated with conventional paper-based systems – printing, storage, and distribution – will be ample, while together bolstering transparency and accountability in service delivery.”
The 1Gov platform prioritizes data security through robust encrypted storage, enabling faster and more informed decision-making. Oghoetuoma emphasized the collaborative spirit driving the project, stating, “With MDAs aligned under a shared vision of improved service delivery - a core tenet of the Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda – Nigeria is building the foundation for a truly seamless digital government ecosystem.”
Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju,Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, hailed the rollout as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s digital transformation. “1Gov signifies Nigeria’s entry into a new era of governance – characterized by rapid decision-making, fortified document security, and, ultimately, enhanced services for our citizens. this is about creating a government that is clever, responsive, and competitive on the global stage.”
The platform’s benefits extend to Nigeria’s international relations. A senior official within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted the platform’s importance for diplomatic engagements. ”Adopting a sovereign system strengthens our diplomatic communications and allows for a more agile response to international developments.”
A Suite of Digital Tools for Modern Governance
The 1Government Cloud offers a thorough suite of sovereign digital tools, including:
GovDrive: Secure, encrypted file management.
GovMail: Secure inter-agency correspondence.
gove-Sign: Legally recognized electronic approvals.
GovConference: Encrypted virtual meetings.
* GovAsset Management & GovCollaboration: Tools designed to enhance accountability and teamwork.
The initiative aligns with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation’s directive to achieve a fully paperless civil service by December 2025. A phased implementation, prioritizing staff training and infrastructure development, is currently underway.
The Federal Government believes the 1Government Cloud will not only streamline internal processes but also position Nigeria as a leader in secure, digitally-driven governance, joining a growing number of nations embracing sovereign cloud solutions to protect public sector operations.
