The cyberattack compromised sensitive medical records, Social Security numbers, family information, and intelligence-related details of named FBI staffers. An internal memo distributed across the bureau indicated that officials operated under the assumption that every employee had been exposed, according to previous reporting by Reuters. ShinyHunters initially gave the bureau a week to retract an advisory targeted at the hackers, setting an expiration for Tuesday. However, the hackers subsequently stated that the ultimatum was not a deadline or a threat and that they had no intention of publishing the data. “This was all a marketing campaign,” the group stated on Monday.

Law Enforcement Response and International Arrests

Leatherman pointed to the recent arrest of a Dutch man connected to the ShinyHunters investigation as a warning to other cybercriminals who believe anonymity or associates will protect them. “Other groups believed anonymity or their friends would protect them, and they were wrong,” Leatherman said in his address, leading the FBI’s Cyber Division. “You know how to find us, and we know how to find you. I suggest you reach out first while the choice is still yours.” Dutch news agency ANP reported that the 24-year-old man arrested in the Netherlands, identified by his former employer Amsterdam-based cybersecurity company Neo Security as Pepijn van der Stap, is also under investigation for alleged murder orders found on a laptop during a police raid. Reuters has not been able to reach Van der Stap or identify a lawyer or representative. Meanwhile, ShinyHunters has asserted that Van der Stap had no association with the group.
