Tokyo Drift‘s Iconic RX-7 Fetches over $1 Million at Auction
A Mazda RX-7 featured in the 2006 film the Fast and the furious: Tokyo Drift has sold for over $1 million, a remarkable sum for a film that initially underperformed at the box office, grossing $157 million worldwide. Despite its modest financial performance and limited screen time for original lead characters, the third installment in the franchise has cultivated a dedicated fanbase willing to invest considerably in its automotive legacy.
While the film’s script has been described as lackluster, its visual elements have been praised, especially its stunt work and cinematography. The selection of vehicles, including a Nissan Silvia, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-8, and Ford Mustang Fastback, is considered one of the strongest in the franchise.

The specific RX-7 in question is instantly recognizable for its distinctive black-and-orange paint scheme, serving as the hero car for Sung Kang’s character, Han Lue. This particular vehicle is one of only two said to have survived the filming process, contributing to its high value.
The car was extensively modified by Japanese customizer Veilside, renowned for its aerodynamic body kits. This RX-7 sports Veilside’s Fortune widebody kit, which added nearly seven inches to its width, along with a prominent rear spoiler and large side vents. Its pristine condition is attributed to its primary use for still photography and limited driving during production.
