Fan Bingbing Awarded Best Actress at Golden Horse Film Awards for “Mother Bhumi” role
fan Bingbing has won the Best Actress award at the prestigious Golden Horse Film Awards, often referred to as the Chinese-language Oscars, for her performance in the Malaysian film Mother Bhumi. the 44-year-old actress was unable to attend the ceremony in Taipei and delivered her acceptance speech via phone.
The role marks a notable departure for Fan,known for her glamorous roles,as she portrays a widowed farmer and ritual healer. Critics have lauded the performance as a breakthrough. During her acceptance speech, Fan recounted the director’s question - “Are you willing to let me destroy your face?” – and her immediate response: “Fan Bingbing is ready to go all the way.” Director Chong Keat Aun accepted the award on her behalf.
Fan’s career in China has been stalled since 2018, when she became the target of a crackdown on tax evasion. Prior to this, she was one of China’s highest-paid actresses and had appeared in Hollywood productions like X-Men and Iron Man.
In her speech, Fan described the role as a “profound resonance of souls” with the character, adding that it allowed her to “more deeply appreciate the resilient strength inherent in women.” She expressed her hope for future breakthroughs as a Chinese filmmaker and her desire to create work with “greater values and deeper meanings.”
Director Chong, who had previously suggested Fan might attend, admitted he was unsure of her location. He also dedicated the award for Best Original Film Song - a track he wrote the lyrics for - to Fan, stating, “We all believe you can start over. This song is for you.”
The Golden Horse Awards have seen limited participation from Chinese directors and actors since 2018,following a Taiwanese director’s comments supporting taiwan’s independence. beijing,which views Taiwan as part of its territory,banned entertainers from attending the event in 2019. Despite this, last year saw a record number of submissions from China.
Other major awards at the ceremony included Best Film, which went to the Taiwanese production A Foggy Tale, and Best director, awarded to hong Konger Jun Li for his film Queerpanorama.Taiwanese actor Chang Chen won his second Best Leading Actor award for Lucky Lu,and Korean-Canadian Lloyd Kee Choi received the Best New Director award for the same film.
