Fallout 1‘s Necropolis Reimagined in GZDoom Engine, New Trailer Reveals Progress
A highly anticipated mod aiming to recreate a portion of the original Fallout game within the GZDoom engine has resurfaced with a new, four-minute trailer. The project, which frist garnered attention in September 2022 with a 55-second video, now offers a more comprehensive look at its ambitious undertaking, showcasing a faithful rendition of fallout’s iconic Necropolis in a 2.5D perspective. The mod, spearheaded by artist Berezin, known for his work on other Fallout mods like Sonora and Olympus 2207, meticulously captures the distinct art style of the classic Fallout titles and translates it into a 3D environment.
The trailer highlights Berezin’s proficiency in adapting the Fallout aesthetic, evident in details such as the vacuum tube, monochrome green message reader, which features damage numbers, environmental observations, and characteristic witty remarks. The mod appears to be a direct recreation of the Necropolis sequence from Fallout 1, rather than an entirely new narrative set in the same location. The trailer culminates in a confrontation with the Super Mutant Harry, a boss character from the original game, reinforcing the mod’s commitment to authenticity.
Following the trailer, a message indicates that the mod development is currently 60% complete. A placeholder release date of “??/??/202?” is displayed, with the final digit obscured, suggesting a potential release in 2027. This extended development timeline is understandable, as Berezin is also involved as a developer on the New Blood Fallout-style RPG, and the new trailer for the mod even includes a thank you to New Blood boss Dave oshry. The resurfacing of this project after a notable period of silence is a welcome surprise, demonstrating continued progress and the prosperous fusion of Fallout and Doom’s distinct visual and gameplay styles.
