Paris, France – The Institut de Recherche Stratégique des Écoles Militaires (IRSEM) will host “Fabulae mundi Session 4: ‘representing the war in Gaza: a critical approach to the construction of strategic narratives on Instagram'” on December 15th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Saint-Exupéry Room (Building 13).The session, led by Lise Dabrowski, will dissect how major media outlets frame the conflict through visual and textual content on the platform.
The session addresses a growing concern: the influence of social media in shaping public understanding of war.Dabrowski’s analysis focuses on Instagram posts from Al Jazeera, BBC News, and France 24 between October 7th and 14th, 2023, utilizing critical discourse analysis (CDA) to examine how each outlet constructs competing narratives. The discussion will explore the impact of platform constraints on media storytelling, the aestheticization of conflict, and the strategies used to convey legitimacy and authority.
The first part of the session will detail the corpus construction and comparative analysis criteria. The second will delve into the findings, highlighting framing techniques, event prioritization, and the dissemination of narrative regimes within the digital public sphere. Specific attention will be paid to the use of imagery, video formatting, and the representation of suffering, destruction, and resistance.
