TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN – Uzbekistan national team coach Fabio Cannavaro has pinpointed Colombia’s “technique, intensity, and talent” as key strengths ahead of a crucial March friendly, revealing a team-focused strategy aimed at making a surprise impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup – the nation’s first-ever appearance in the tournament.
Cannavaro emphasized the necessity of collective play against formidable opponents like Colombia and Portugal, scheduled for upcoming international friendlies. “You have to work as a team, because if you are going to play against teams like Portugal and colombia, on an individual level it is complicated. That can onyl tempt the game as a team, because football is ultimately a team sport,” he stated. This approach is particularly vital as uzbekistan prepares for the challenges of the World Cup and seeks to elevate its competitive level.
The Italian strategist acknowledged the disparity in intensity between the domestic Uzbek league and the demands of international competition. “For me it is complicated because the local league is not top level,so the intensity we have there is not high. Little by little we have to improve this, but I am in the World Cup, we are in the World Cup. It is our first time in history,so I have peace of mind because what comes out for us will be good,” Cannavaro explained, expressing confidence in his team’s preparation despite the limitations.
Specifically addressing Colombia, Cannavaro lauded Néstor Lorenzo’s squad.”in Colombia there is technique, intensity, talent, it has once again been a good team. It’s not easy,” he said. He indicated that the ten days leading up to the March friendlies will be dedicated to refining team dynamics and preparing for the World Cup.
