ROME – Caritas ⁣Italiana will present “Going beyond economic growth. Europe’s role in building a fair economy on Wednesday,November 26th,from 11:00-12:30 at it’s Rome headquarters (via ‌Aurelia 796). The volume, rooted in a prior publication by Caritas Europa – Going beyond economic growth – critically examines the prevailing focus on GDP growth as the‍ primary solution‌ to poverty and planetary challenges. It argues for a fundamental shift in viewpoint, advocating for ‌a return to the core values of a social Europe and⁢ a just, enduring economic transition centered ⁣on genuine needs and reduced inequality. The book proposes a transformative reflection on the economy, envisioning a Europe⁤ that prioritizes climate justice, inclusion, and rights, and challenges the notion of limitless growth.

The presentation will feature introductory remarks ⁣from Paolo Valente, deputy director and⁢ head of publications of Caritas Italiana, and ⁤ Silvia Sinibaldi, deputy director. Massimo Pallottino, coordinator of the Studies and advocacy unit of Caritas Italiana and editor of the volume, and Prof. Andrea Roventini of the Sant’Anna ‍High School in Pisa will also contribute to the discussion.

Drawing from the principles of Catholic social teaching, the book ‍calls for a re-evaluation‍ of economic priorities, urging⁣ a move away from a model that compromises social justice and environmental⁢ sustainability in‍ pursuit of competitiveness.
