Brussels is bracing for a protracted trade standoff with Washington, as the European Union finalizes its response to tariffs imposed by the U.S. on steel and aluminum. The EUS strategy involves a phased implementation of its own tariffs, targeting a range of American goods.
Gradual Response
The European Commission is adopting a measured approach, signaling that the initial countermeasures will be followed by more significant actions if necessary.Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade, stated Monday that our answer will be gradual.
this strategy aims to exert pressure on the U.S. administration while minimizing immediate economic disruption.
Initial Targets
The first wave of EU tariffs is slated to take effect next Tuesday, focusing on specific U.S. products. These include:
- Bourbon
- Speedboats
- Jeans
These targeted measures are designed as targeted pin pricks
in response to the U.S. tariffs announced in February. Though, lobbying efforts continue to try and spare certain products from specific countries and producers who fear further American levies.
Escalating Tensions
The EU’s initial response may prove insufficient, given the broader scope of potential U.S. tariffs. Since February, Washington has threatened tariffs on the car industry (25%) and nearly all other EU goods (20%).

A Bold Proposal
In an effort to de-escalate tensions, the EU has proposed a radical solution: the elimination of all tariffs on cars and other industrial goods. Sefcovic unveiled this proposal, highlighting the EU’s willingness to negotiate.
Currently, the EU imposes a 10% import duty on American passenger cars, while the U.S. levies a 2.5% duty on European cars. Additionally, the U.S. has a 25% tariff on imported pick-up trucks. The EU’s proposal would eliminate all such tariffs.
