COVID-19 probably won’t repeat the fate of SARS
Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of I.M. Sechenov Nikolai Briko urged not to hope for the sudden disappearance of the coronavirus. According to his forecast, SARS-CoV2 will gain a foothold in the human population for a long time and in the future will become one of the causes of seasonal SARS.
In conversation with “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” Bricaud said that the coronavirus, apparently, will not be able to abruptly disappear, as happened with the causative agent of SARS. According to the epidemiologist, COVID-19 will become one of the viruses of the group of microorganisms that cause SARS. Similar transformations happened with the virus that caused the pandemic in 2009-2010.
Briko also commented on the current exacerbation of the disease. In his opinion, this may be due to the individual characteristics of each organism. The scientist also noted that the dose of the virus that entered the human body and the degree of contact with the source of infection are important.
The scientist associated the sharp increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the fall with the return of the population from vacations, as a result of which the number of contacts at workplaces and in public transport increased. Another negative factor is non-observance of the mask regime and social distancing, the epidemiologist emphasized.
