Drunk Driver Crashes, Flees M1 Motorway
Suspect Apprehended Near Border
A shocking incident unfolded on the M1 motorway as a driver, reportedly intoxicated, caused a collision before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing the scene. Authorities quickly apprehended the suspect who was attempting to cross the border.
Motorway Mayhem
The accident occurred on July 20, along the M1 motorway section heading towards Austria. A car veered into another vehicle in an interior lane, subsequently crashing into a ditch and coming to rest against a fence. The driver, identified as a 35-year-old foreign national, fled the wreckage on foot.
Police successfully located the man several kilometers away, walking towards the border. Officials confirmed his apprehension at the 142-kilometer mark of the motorway.
Suspect Charged and Detained
The 35-year-old individual was taken into custody due to strong suspicions of driving under the influence. He was transported for blood sampling to determine his blood alcohol content. Subsequently, he was interrogated as a suspect by the Győr Police Headquarters, who have decided to arrest him.
In Hungary, driving under the influence remains a significant public safety concern. In 2023, approximately 5,000 individuals were caught driving while intoxicated on national roads (Police.hu Statistics 2023).
