Munich, Germany – Flights at Munich Airport were suspended Tuesday evening after the repeated sighting of drones in the airspace, impacting approximately 3,000 passengers. The disruption began around 10 PM local time and continued through midnight, forcing a temporary shutdown of operations.
The incident occurred as Munich enters the final weekend of its annual oktoberfest celebration, a period of heightened travel demand. While authorities have not yet identified the drone operators or their motives, the airspace closure raises security concerns and poses notable logistical challenges for travelers. Federal police deployed ground units and helicopters in an attempt to locate the drones and any potential suspects, but were unsuccessful.
The airport routinely restricts flights between 10 PM and midnight to protect the sleep of nearby residents. however, this incident prompted a complete cessation of air traffic. The Bundespolizei has not yet confirmed when normal flight operations will resume, initially scheduled for 5 AM Friday, though no cancellations were visible on the airport’s website as of Wednesday morning.
Investigators are currently working to determine the source of the drone activity. The disruption underscores the growing challenge airports face in mitigating the risks posed by unauthorized drone flights. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules.
