Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Will Not Offer a Switch Upgrade path
Square Enix has confirmed that owners of the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, slated for release in early 2026, will not be able to upgrade to the version launching on Nintendo’s next-generation console, currently referred to as the Switch 2. The announcement follows a similar policy revealed for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.
The confirmation comes via a newly published FAQ on the official Japanese dragon Quest website. When asked directly if an upgrade path exists, Square Enix stated plainly: “no, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on.” This means players desiring the game on both platforms will need to purchase separate copies.
Beyond the lack of an upgrade, save data will also be incompatible between the Switch adn Switch 2 versions of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined. The FAQ explicitly states that save data cannot be transferred from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version, or vice versa. Furthermore, any downloadable bonus content acquired with the game will be platform-specific.
“The Switch 2 version and Switch version are treated as separate games, so save data cannot be transferred or shared between them,” the FAQ clarifies.
This approach mirrors Square Enix’s strategy for other titles releasing on both systems, suggesting a potential precedent for future releases accompanying the launch of the Switch 2.
