Dozens of Children Evacuated as Russian Drone Strike Ignites Nursery in Ukraine
KHARKIV, Ukraine – Dozens of children and staff were evacuated from a nursery in the Vovchansk district of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Saturday after it was struck by a Russian drone, sparking a large fire. No fatalities have been reported, but the attack underscores the escalating dangers faced by civilians, notably children, amid intensified Russian aerial assaults.
The strike occurred as Ukraine continues to defend against a renewed Russian offensive focused on the Kharkiv region. This latest incident highlights the Kremlin’s pattern of targeting civilian infrastructure, despite repeated denials, and raises concerns about the safety of vulnerable populations as the conflict enters its third year. The attack also comes as Russia reportedly seeks territorial concessions from Ukraine in peace talks, demanding control over areas in the Donetsk region and the demilitarization of Kyiv, conditions widely viewed as unacceptable by Ukrainian officials.
According to Ukrainian officials, the nursery was hit by a drone strike around 10:00 AM local time. Footage circulating online shows flames engulfing the building, with adults carrying young children to safety. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, battling the blaze and providing medical assistance to those affected.
“The heroic actions of adults ensured all children and staff were evacuated,” stated Anton gerashchenko, an advisor to Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs, on X (formerly Twitter).
The attack on the nursery follows a pattern of Russian strikes targeting civilian areas in Ukraine. In recent weeks, Kharkiv and other cities in the northeast have experienced a surge in attacks, causing widespread damage and casualties. The intentional targeting of educational facilities is a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
The incident occurred amidst stalled peace negotiations between ukraine and Russia. Moscow is reportedly demanding that Ukraine cede territory in the Donetsk region and agree to demilitarization, effectively leaving Kyiv vulnerable to future attacks.Ukrainian officials have rejected these demands, vowing to defend their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
