Dorna Sports to End MotoE Championship After 2025 Season
MADRID, SPAIN – Dorna sports has announced it will discontinue teh FIM motoe World Championship following the conclusion of the 2025 season, citing lagging innovation in electric motorcycle technology as a key factor. The decision marks a significant shift for the series, which began in 2019 as a showcase for sustainable motorsport and a testing ground for electric motorcycle growth.
The move comes as Dorna, which holds promotional rights through 2060 for MotoGP,MotoE,the Superbike World Championship, the JuniorGP World Championship, and the Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship, seeks to focus resources on areas demonstrating more rapid technological advancement. Despite initial enthusiasm and a commitment to a greener future, the pace of development in electric motorcycle performance has not met expectations, hindering the series’ ability to deliver the competitive spectacle desired by fans and stakeholders.
“They’ve seen the same thing that I’ve seen in terms of the potential, in terms of the unique intellectual property, the global fan base,” said a Dorna Sports representative, speaking generally about bringing in expertise from Formula 1 and other businesses.”They’re going to realy be a catalyst to help us take advantage of the real strengths of the sport.” This suggests a strategic refocusing of investment towards core MotoGP and WorldSBK properties, leveraging external expertise to maximize revenue and global reach.
Dorna Sports is currently targeting revenue of €520 million in the 2025 fiscal year, bolstered by an expanded 22-race MotoGP calendar which, as of this announcement, has experienced no race cancellations. The decision to end MotoE dose not signal a complete abandonment of electric technology, but rather a recalibration of its role within Dorna’s portfolio. The company will continue to explore opportunities for sustainable technologies within its other championships, but will prioritize areas were innovation is demonstrably accelerating.
The future of the MotoE infrastructure, including the Energica motorcycles and associated support systems, remains unclear. Dorna has not yet released details regarding the disposition of these assets following the 2025 season.
