Putin says Trump Plan Could End Ukraine War, Warns of Further Offensive if Rejected
MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Friday that a 28-point plan proposed by the United States for Ukraine could “serve as a basis for a definitive peaceful settlement” to the ongoing conflict, but warned russia is prepared to achieve its objectives “by arms, as part of an armed struggle” if Kyiv refuses to engage in serious negotiations.
Putin indicated the plan, reportedly originating with Donald Trump, has only been discussed with Moscow ”in broad terms,” with the U.S. requesting Russian “compromises” and “flexibility.” He emphasized Russia’s willingness to negotiate a peaceful resolution, stating, “We are ready to conduct peaceful negotiations and resolve issues through peaceful means. Though, this of course requires a thorough discussion of all the details of the proposed plan. We are ready for it.”
The Russian president accused Ukraine and its European allies of continuing to pursue a “strategic defeat” of Russia on the battlefield. He directly linked the fate of further territorial gains to Kyiv’s willingness to consider the U.S. proposal, stating, “If kyiv is unwilling to discuss President Trump’s proposals and refuses to do so, then kyiv and european warmongers must understand that the events that occurred in Kupiansk will inevitably repeat themselves on other key sectors of the front.”
Putin’s comments come amid ongoing fighting in eastern Ukraine and reflect a continued assertion of Russian military strength, coupled with a stated openness to diplomatic solutions-contingent on terms favorable to Moscow. The plan has reportedly been met with concern in Kyiv.
