DJ Young Slade Death: Drowning Linked to Psilocybin Use – Accident Ruled

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Nathan Smith, the 27-year-old son of rapper Lil Jon, died from accidental drowning whereas under the influence of psilocybin. The ruling, issued Friday, concludes the initial phase of the investigation into his death.

Smith, who performed as DJ Young Slade, was reported missing on February 3rd after leaving his home in Milton, Georgia, early in the morning without his phone, according to a statement from the Milton Police Department. Authorities noted at the time that he “may be disoriented and in need of assistance.” A body was recovered from a pond in Mayfield Park three days later and subsequently identified as Smith.

The medical examiner’s report detailed that toxicology tests revealed the presence of psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, in Smith’s system. Investigators determined the drug was a contributing factor in the drowning, according to reports from People and E! News.

Lil Jon confirmed his son’s death on February 6th, expressing profound grief in a statement shared with the public. “I am extremely heartbroken for the tragic loss of our son, Nathan Smith,” he said. He and Smith’s mother, Nicole Smith, described their son as “the kindest human being you would ever meet,” adding that he was “immensely caring, thoughtful, polite, passionate, and warmhearted.”

Local rescue crews, including divers, conducted an extensive search of ponds and waterways in the area following Smith’s disappearance. Volunteers assisted in the effort, and officials thanked them for their support while urging the public to refrain from speculation.

Smith was a graduate of Latest York University and worked as a DJ, music producer, and engineer. Friends and colleagues in the music industry remembered him as a talented and creative artist.

The Milton Police Department stated that while the medical examiner’s ruling concludes the cause-of-death investigation, their inquiry remains open. Authorities have asked anyone with information related to the case to contact them.

Lil Jon, known for his hit songs like “Gain Low,” has a younger daughter, Nahara. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time. The rapper recently expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to spend time with his son before his death.
